New England Science & Sailing (NESS) is based in Stonington, CT, and runs on-the-water programs with homeschool families across New England. NESS’s marine science and adventure sports programs use the water as a classroom by teaching science through sailing, surfing, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and hands-on experiments. NESS programs are correlated to science standards, ocean literacy principles, and socio-emotional learning standards. NESS operates under four core values that are present in all programs: personal growth, stewardship, inclusiveness, and experiential learning.
In response to COVID-19, NESS has built 13 online experiential learning courses that are engaging and encourage hands-on imagination. While this doesn’t substitute an on-the-water experience, NESS is excited to be able to expand our reach to more homeschool families with our hands-on marine science programming.
The NESS instructor-led, hands-on programs include topics such as: marine debris, navigation, erosion, camouflage, deep sea exploration, and even sailing at home! Classes range from 1-2 hours based on the needs of the students. These courses are correlated to standards related to science, ocean literacy, and socio-emotional learning.
If you are interested in learning more about NESS online or on-the-water programs, please feel free to email Nina Quaratella, Education Specialist, at nquaratella@nessf.org or call at 860-535-9362.
