Mane Stream adaptive riding programHunterdon County and Somerset County
Mane Stream’s mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with physical, developmental, emotional and medical challenges through a diverse program of equine assisted activities, equine assisted therapy and educational initiatives. Mane Stream offers physical, occupational and speech-language, and mental health therapy services provided by licensed therapists for adults and children (2 years and older) with multiple challenges. There is simply no piece of equipment as dynamic and as repetitive as the movement of or interactions with the horse. The benefits to muscle tone, core strength, coordination and flexibility are considerable. The adaptive riding program (4 years and older) is designed to teach basic through advanced horsemanship and riding skills. Lessons are available in private and semi-private formats; riders are grouped and lessons customized according to age and skill level. In addition, riders are paired with leaders and side walkers, if needed, to ensure safety. Mane Stream hosts an inclusive day camp open to children with disabilities and their typically developing peers. For beginners, summer camp is an excellent introduction to horses and riding in a safe and secure environment. Mane Stream would not exist without its volunteers who are needed on a daily basis from Monday to Saturday. Anyone 14 or old can become part of the Mane Stream team helping out with everything from administrative and office tasks, barn chores and maintenance, grooming and tacking, and assisting with lessons and therapy sessions.
