The annual Utah Radon Poster Contest is a way for children to learn about a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. They can use their creativity to create a small poster showing what they learned about radon.
Radon poster contest science lesson plans and a PowerPoint are available from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) Radiation Control Division website.
The annual contest allows children ages 9-19 to submit a small poster.
Categories are: 1) What is radon, 2) Where does radon come from? 3) How does radon get into houses? 4) Radon can cause lung cancer, and 5) Test your home for radon.
Winners (and their parents) will receive a $100 cash award and be entered into the national contest!
Utah has had several national winners over the years. Pull out your art supplies and get started!
Explore more about radon and radiation by checking out a Geiger counter kit from Utah DEQ. Low-energy sources and shielding materials are included with the Geiger counter. These can be used to learn about radiation in our world and to demonstrate the concept of shielding.
