A unique experience in civic engagement, YMCA Youth and Government (Y&G) is a three-day conference in which high school students participate directly in a simulation of the democratic process. Y&G develops involved citizens by offering students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their beliefs while engaging constructively with those who hold like and opposing views.
Participants draft all legislation, serve in all leadership roles, and learn about the process of passing legislation. They learn leadership, experience the legislative process, and have a chance to network with other student leaders from around Maine while talking about the issues they see facing the state and its future.
The Maine YMCA Youth & Government program started in 1943. In the past 80 years, more than 8,200 Maine high school students have participated in this unique civic engagement experience. The program culminates in a weekend at the Maine State House, where participants sit in the seats of Maine legislators as they debate the bills they crafted to address what they see as the most pressing needs and opportunities facing the State of Maine and its people. This program is truly student-run, with participants drafting and debating all legislation in their elected leadership positions.
We are willing to meet with individuals or groups who would like to become involved.
