Cons: the enrolled option is an extraordinary amount of work and poor value for the money
Grades Used: 9
The curriculum itself is great - creative and thoughtful, will lots of research and writing opportunities. We chose it so that I wasn't doing the grading, which seemed like an appropriate level of independence for 9th grade, but the enrolled option is, frankly, a bit of a scam. It is extremely expensive for the very limited amount of teacher involvement and often long response times for grading. But the really big problem is that a curriculum designed for homeschooling doesn't translate all that well to a structured grading system. Parents using this curriculum for homeschooling can allow it to be student-led: if a topic interests you, delve in deeply for a few weeks, and skip something else The enrolled program makes the students complete virtually every task in the book. It's a truly massive amount of work, with no time or slack to explore areas of individual interest. I recommend the curriculum but absolutely do not recommend the enrolled option.
Cons: Heavy on reading and difficult concepts
Grades Used: 9
Oak Meadow for high school courses, is very intensive. I would equate it to more of a honors/advanced/college prep course versus a standard high school course. The curriculum is very heavy in reading, and some of the reading material are concepts that even some adults do not understand.
The courses are well laid out, however, there isn’t a lot of hands on activities involved, so if your child is looking for that, this might not be the right fit for your family. If you want very traditional public school feel, then their high school courses will likely be what you are looking for.
Cons: Topics are not always extremely thorough and in depth
Grades Used: 3rd
This is our first year of homeschooling and we decided to use Oak Meadow as our main curriculum. I think it is great and we are very satisfied with it so far! It is very organized and easy to use and understand. It tells you what materials you might need and tries to use things you are likely to already have or affordable. It also suggests additional books and ways to go into more depth for particular topics. We did purchase some additional workbooks, books and resources to go along with the curriculum. There isn't a lot of "worksheets" because it is more hands on and creative learning. It is a good idea to make sure you research and understand a topic before doing the lesson with your child. Overall, we are very pleased and will continue using Oak Meadows in the future!
