The United States Geological Survey and the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey have teamed up with West Virginia University to initiate the Appalachian GeoSTEM GeoCamp this summer. High School Students will explore concepts and skills related to the earth sciences, including orienteering, topographic and geologic mapping, forest ecology and more. The GeoCamp experience will go far beyond indoor lessons and lectures by putting learning into the field alongside experts, to create hands-on experiences that allow students to explore possible future interests and careers. This 5 day, 4-night summer adventure will be sited at WVU’s Outdoor Education Center and on the campus of West Virginia University, with lodging in yurts and campus student housing. The forests, rivers, caves and terrain around Morgantown provide a perfect environment for exploration and learning while immersed in the nature. The GeoCamp will take a non-traditional approach by integrating field-based earth science and mapping lessons with outdoor adventures. Students will learn about the natural world all around them while physically engaged in rock climbing, rafting, cycling and more. In addition to being highly engaging teaching tools, these outdoor activities provide opportunities for self-discovery and personal growth. Program admission is first come, first serve. 24 participant spots available. $650 Registration Fee Required.
