Resource of the Week: Teach With Documents

Margaret Mead said, “Children must learn how to think, not what to think.” To that end, researching and evaluating documents are two of the most valuable skills a student can learn. In school and in life, the ability to evaluate sources is crucial for determining whether information is factual. The National Archives has put together a group of lessons and resources for teachers to Teach With Documents. Docs Teach includes ready to use activities as well as selected primary sources for teachers. Document Analysis Worksheet downloads will help students evaluate sources based on specific criteria. Lesson plans like Teaching Six Big Ideas in the Constitution (grades 8-12) are available in the Center for Legislative Archives section. Getting Started with Primary Sources in the Classroom is a good place to look if you are not sure where to start.
