Goodies: Shurley Grammar, Level 1

[UPDATE: Congratulations to Annie (levanpelt), the winner of our Shurley Grammar: Level 1 curriculum. Annie, please contact me within 7 days with your address so that I can send your books.]

Looking for a curriculum your kids will like?
An online homeschool curriculum can open new doors by creating an interactive learning experience that brings concepts to life.

Homeschooling should be fun.
With Time4Learning, it can be!

The first goodie up for grabs is the Teacher Manual and Student Practice Booklet for Shurley Grammar, Level 1. The covers have some wear to them but I did not see any writing inside either book. The CD is included with the Teacher’s Manual. According to the back cover,

“Shurley English reaches all of the learning styles of students while using repetition, fun, and student-teacher interaction to help them learn difficult English skills… The most important effect of Shurley English on students may not only be their increased grasp of language and improved grammar and writing skills, but their heightened self-confidence and self-esteem. Not only do the students gain confidence in English, but they carry this improved attitude into other subject areas as well.”

To see reviews from other homeschoolers using Shurley Grammar, visit their page in our Homeschool Reviews section. To learn more from the publisher, visit Shurley’s website. If you would like this item, please post a comment below telling me what you like about it (one entry per person, please). Have a great week!

Reminders: The items in Goodies Up For Grabs may be gently used or like new. While the item itself should be in good condition (I’m not guaranteeing it because I won’t be watching every video or listening to every CD), the covers may not be in great shape. As of this writing, items are all from my personal shelves but that may change if friends offer to contribute to the stash. I may not have actually used the item. (You don’t ever do that, do you? Buy curriculum and not use it? I didn’t think so.) Some of the resources may be older versions – I have several great videos but they are on VHS tapes – so be sure to pay attention to whether the format of a resource will work for you.

The rules are simple – for each item, just post in the comments section of the blog post what you like about that particular item. The choice will be random, so it will not increase your chances of winning to tell how your husband just left you and your house burned down and you lost your job so you really *need* the item. Keep it simple, and happy homeschooling!

Writing is not my favorite subject, & I have yet to find a curriculum that helps make it more enjoyable. I would like to try this.

  2. annette

sounds like an good program, would be interesting to check it out. Would be nice to have a grammar that is interesting and engaging.

  3. Joella

That book looks fabulous. I like that it is a level 1. I could use it. Thank you for being so generous.

  4. JC

What I like best is that everything is included in the curriculum. It appears to be broken down in easy to follow sections much like the Daily Writing Traits. Although we are using the Horizons, I know that change can be good and I have been looking at Shurley’s products for a while now.

  5. Patricia

I bought a used copy of the next level up so I could check it out. Thanks for spreading generosity!

  6. jackie

I would love to win these for my kids.

  7. Robin

We are ready to try a new Grammar Curriculum and would be happy to have the opportunity to try Shurley for free!!

  8. Annie

We adopted a little boy from Bulgaria and this would be great to help his written English really improve!

  9. Kimberlee

I am looking for any tool that will help my kiddos who are really struggling. This sounds like a great resource.

  10. gina

I am always interested in another grammar resource, particularly one that has been useful enough to have the covers worn.

  11. Celeste

We just began homeschooling and I’m looking for away to build confidence in my third grader whom was “left behind” in public school. He actually told me he was “stupid.” This program states that it will teach in different ways to reach all students and build confidence. Sounds like something I should try. He is currently a 1st grade almost 2nd in writing and spelling. 2.5 in reading level.

  12. Brandi Lidikay

I would love to own this copy of Shurley! Thanks for the opportunity!

  13. Michelle

We’re currently struggling with the grammar curriculum we are using. I have heard great things about Shurley and would love to try it!

  14. Wendy

Have heard good things about this from a family member! Would love to try it!
    Happy New Year!

  15. Sarah

A friend gave me level 2 so I would love to win this and not have to search on line for a reasonably priced used copy or level 1.

  16. pamela stamps

I have a friend who uses Shurley and I would be intesested in trying it with my son.

  17. Diana

This has always intrigued me whenever I’ve seen it in catalogs. I hope it’s as good as it sounds. Would love to try it.

  18. Lia

Fun, Fun! The giveaway is great, please put us in the pot!

  19. Laura

Love Shurley – the little jingles that encourages proper grammar are fun for students to learn.

  20. Vicki

Thank you for this opportunity–I have tried other grammar programs and would love to change things up a bit and try something new.

  21. Emily

We are lacking in the grammar department and have been looking into this curriculum. Would love it!

  22. Felecia

Love the jingles. My child learns thru music so this would be perfect. You betcha I would love to win this! Thanks for considering!

  23. Kendra

Looks like a good product, grammar not my greatest subject so would help quite a bit.

  24. Pasaka

While I am very thankful that my house has not burned down, and my husband is at my side, I would still love to try this curriculum! Thank you so much for the opportunity, if only to wish and hope! Happy New Year!

  25. Chrystina Swain

Sweet! Sounds like a good find in the new owners hands.

  26. Deanna

I would love to try this program with my son. Hes eems to need to gain confidence in an area before he can do well with it. I think this might really help him with grammar.

  27. cathy graham

This is my first year to HS my 5th grade daughter. After “investigating” the millions of HS curriculum and talking to too many people to count, we settled on ABEKA…DVD’s and all. So, you can imagine the expense. However, it’s just not working well for us. I had heard about Shurley Grammar, but being new to HS, I did not quite know how to “piece together” a curriculum with a “little bit of this and a little bit of that.” Now, I wish I had talked to more “women of wisdom” and done just that. Other HS moms keep raving about Shurley Grammar. Just yesterday, I was wishing I had that, but felt too guilty to pay for something else since we had so much from ABEKA. But, we’ll see how this turns out. Thanks for the website! Cathy

“The most important effect of Shurley English on students may not only be their increased grasp of language and improved grammar and writing skills, but their heightened self-confidence and self-esteem. Not only do the students gain confidence in English, but they carry this improved attitude into other subject areas as well.”

with a special needs child the idea that it wants to build self esteem appeals to me, I am constantly looking for programs that will have the least frustration for my son.

  29. Robyn

Just started homeschooling my son–perfect timing! Hope I win–thanks!

  30. Pei w Lu

  35. Brent Fazekas

Would love to teach my girls from one of the best.

  36. Elizabeth Beatty

I think the jingles will help my dyslexic daughter retain more.

  37. April

I love trying out new products with the younger ones coming along!

  38. Shelly C

I have used this curriculum when I taught school and LOVED it!! I would certainly love to use this with my own child!!

  39. Michelle P

I am always looking for new ways to inspire our grammar practice! Not one of my favs when I was in school so I need a lot of help in this area to teach my boys. This looks like a fun book to get started with for the new year!

  40. Dawn Chandler

I love that there is a jingles section! My oldest struggles with memorizing but excels when it is put to music!

    Love the Goodies idea!!

  41. Cindy

I’ve been thinking about buying this!

  42. Vanessa Cordova

Hi,I have a 1st grader and My daughter is in 4th grade, she has been in homeschool since 3rd grade but she has had a very difficult time with writing. She just seems uninterested and she just finds it very difficult to do her work in this subject. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the towel. I need to find a way to get her motivated and able to comprehend and retain. Read in the website that each chapter should be done in a week and about 25 to 45 mins. a day. Wouldnt hurt to try Shurley Grammar.

  43. Marcy

I’ve used Shurley Grammar with my oldest 2 kids and they are great at their grammar skills. I want to start this with my youngest 2 kids also, but I never had the level 1 book. Would love to have this!

  44. kelly payne

ok.. here goes nothin’… my daugher (17) wrecked her car, someone ran into the back of my car and ran off over Christmas break, and my husband’s truck just got sideswiped… how’s that for sorry… anyway… no way to get to the homeschool bookstore to buy this great product for my son who needs grammar help!

  45. Brenda

I’ve only used 2nd grade and up. Would be fun to see what level 1 is like for my younger kids.

  46. Melissa Cobb

I am new to homeschooling this year and have heard a lot of great reviews about this curriculum. I would love the opportunity to get started with it.

  47. Monica Duenes

I have wanted to implement this program after many great reviews! Hoping this is the chance to get started!!!

  48. Pattie Hooke

I am homeschooling my 6yr grandaughter and recieve your newsletter to help me. I checked today because she will finish what she is working on in March and I need to decide what to do next. There is so much to choose from I feel overwhelmed and pressured because wrong choices can be frustrating,a waste of money, and time. This may be an answer to prayer. If not I still appreciate all your mentoring and always consider your advice. KEEP IT COMING!

  49. Kelli

I am always interested in trying a new approach, I enjoy anything that makes learning enjoyable and can be used with varied styles of learning . I also am looking for new curriculum for the future.

  50. Kelli

I would enjoy teaching my three boys with this as they are all different types of learners

  51. Tina E

I would love to try this program with my twins.

  52. Angel Miller

I would love a chance to use this program. I have heard many great things about it and need something that will work with my son, who is now in 7th grade and still struggling with English and math.

  53. Donna Cleveland

I would love to use Shurley English with my daughters.

  54. Tonya

Oh, this is awesome. I love Shurley English as it came highly recommended by my 9th grade (public school) English teacher. She allowed me to review the one she used with my older child and this would be magnificent to have with my youngest DD!

  55. Leann

Looks like a great resource, especially as I’m trying to find curriculum now for next year. I like that it uses songs to remember grammer skills… what a great concept!

  56. Chance

Grammar is my weakest teaching area. : Anything that helps me teach it to my boys would be great!

By the way, this is a great giveaway idea!

  57. Christine Smith

I have used Shurley with my older kids and what I really like is that it teaches the essentials of grammar and helps kids to learn the parts of speech and essay writing at a much earlier stage! I don’t even remember learning half of the stuff my 5th grader is doing until high school! My high schooler (now in a private Christian school) has used Shurley for several years and is an excellent writer – her teachers ask how it is that writes so well, and we tell them it is thanks to Shurley! I have not used it prior to second grade, so it would be great to have a first grade book to try with my son next year!

  58. Chanty

I’ve always wanted to try this program. It looks great

  59. Kathrine Ewing

What I like the best about the program (that I’ve just read in your posting, since I’m unfamiliar with the program) is that it works for ALL learning styles. For a parent with 3 children with 3 different learning styles, this makes SO MUCH SENSE!!!

  60. Melissa King

“The most important effect of Shurley English on students may not only be their increased grasp of language and improved grammar and writing skills, but their heightened self-confidence and self-esteem.” What parent wouldn’t like that as an added bonus? 🙂
