Songs for a Teenage Nomad

By Kim Culbertson

Songs for a Teenage Nomad is the story of Calle Smith. She moves to Andreas Bay, California, at the start of ninth grade after moving twelve places in eight years. Calle’s father abandoned her when she was young, leaving her to live with her ‘nomadic’ mother. Calle soon finds herself surrounded by people that she never would have thought to befriend, and when Calle discovers the troubling truth about her father, her life is changed forever.

The author of Songs for a Teenage Nomad, Kim Culbertson, has a unique style of writing. Her characters have depth, something seriously lacking in many stories in this day and age. Calle’s friends Drew, Alexa, Cass, and Eli, have distinctly different personalities. The ‘mean girl’, Amber, is truly evil and you wish someone would put her in her place.

This book is mostly directed toward teenagers, which is something to keep in mind. Songs for a Teenage Nomad is a true page-turner. I would definitely recommend it, although some swearing is involved. Concepts such as public displays of affection are covered in this book as well, but past such things, this book is fantastic.
