Home School Days in Colonial Williamsburg

During the year, Colonial Williamsburg designates several weeks as Homeschooler Experiences. In addition to the variety of activities and programming throughout the Historic Area, special programs are scheduled for homeschool participants including a variety of hands-on opportunities. Special rates are available during this period for homeschoolers. Groups or individuals are welcome. Sample itineraries are available. In the fall, the experience focuses on government, politics, and the Revolution. Families are encouraged to participate in the Revolutionary City® programs as well as the other diverse offerings in the Historic Area. In addition, homeschoolers have the opportunity to participate in exclusive meetings with a Person of the Past. Spring experiences emphasize domestic life and include opportunities to explore family life, education, and the apprenticeship system. Visits to trade shops encourage students to delve into sciences and math as well as history. A variety of interactive experiences exclusively for homeschoolers is featured daily at the Powell House. Science Museum of Virgina: Engineering Day
February 28, 2010
You won’t want to miss the Great Egg Drop Contest. Egg containers are dropped down a stairwell and contestants aim at a 4-foot-by-4-foot target. Trophies and cash awards are presented in three categories: the lightest cushion-type container that hits or comes closest to the target, the lightest parachute-type device that hits or comes closest to the target and the most creative design. Cheer on your favorite middle and high school students in the Bridge Building competition. See which ice cream-stick bridge can hold the most weight before it breaks. In addition to prizes for the most weight-bearing bridges, there are also awards for the most aesthetic and most innovative design and for a design that beats the judges’ design. Advance registration is encouraged. Career Day is also a chance for students and their parents to talk with engineers, mathematicians and scientists about college and career opportunities. Sponsored by the Richmond Joint Engineers Council. The event is held in conjunction with Engineers Week.

REACH will be holding it's 8th Homeschool Formal on the 18th of May at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg starting at 5:30pm and ending at 10:30pm. This is for all teens 13 and up. The event will take place in the Ball Room which is located in the new section. Also if the weather is nice the teens can go out in the patio area as well. Last year we had over 100+ teens attend and every year REACH does this event we sell out. Early bird special - Now till the 20th of Feb the cost is $45.00 per teen. This includes food, door prizes and etc. After the 20th of Feb to the 15th of March the cost is $50.00 per teen. After the 15th of March to May 5th the cost is $60.00 per teen. NO TICKETS SOLD AFTER THE 5th of May and no tickets sold at the door.

Are you interested in making animations, interactive stories, digital art, or video games? In this course students will use Scratch, a graphical programming environment from MIT, to bring their creations to life! They will design animated characters and backgrounds, incorporate sounds and music, and learn about digital storytelling and video game design. In the process they will develop valuable skills and gain an understanding of the basics of computer programming. This beginner to intermediate level course will be held at the Athenaeum in Old Town, Alexandria and will be taught by Mindzai Learning instructors. Chemistry Classes
Chemistry classes, using the Apologia Chemistry curriculum, will meet once a week for three hours: one hour of textbook discussion and two hours of lab work. Class times are Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon, or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Homeschool Shop in Culpeper or Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, in New Baltimore/Warrenton. Other locations and times TBA (possible locations include Clifton/Centreville, Woodbridge, or Manassas on Thursday afternoons). Weekly homework will be assigned, tests (about every two weeks) will be administered by the parents, and grades will be given. Cost is $45 per month from September through May, plus a $20 one-time supplies fee. Each student will also supply some household items for labs.

Christian Youth Theater - Fredericksburg
Christian Youth Theater (CYT) is an after-school theater arts training program for students ages 4 - 18. CYT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization funded primarily through its tuition, ticket sales and outside contributions. Every session (fall, winter and spring) CYT offers theater arts classes for children as an after-school activity. Each local program conducts three ten-week sessions throughout the school year, teaching drama, voice, dance and a broad spectrum of specialty theatrical workshops at weekly two-hour classes. Enrolled students have the opportunity to work behind the scenes, or audition and perform on stage in a Broadway-style musical performed for the community.

Outdoor Adventure Classes
The natural world gives us a marvelous setting in which to find this adventure, as well as experience God's beauty, learn new skills, and make friends. This spring, WILD GUYde Adventures will be providing several outdoor experiences for home-schooled students and their parents. Activities like rock climbing, canoe paddling, hiking, and caving will provide outdoor opportunities for families to experience exciting fun with friends, physical skill learning, and fitness apart from traditional team sports. Students in Grades 2-3 will have three half-day trip options (2 hikes, and 1 canoe day); students in grades 4-6 will have four day-trip options (hiking, rock climbing, paddling, and caving); and students in Grades 7-12 will have four day-trips (hiking, climbing, paddling, and caving), coupled with an environmental study topic for each. High School Spanish Classes
Homeschool teacher and mother Clarisa Loparo is offering Spanish I and II classes. The class hopes to have large amounts of interactive dialog and cultural applications. Clarisa is a native speaker and has taught Spanish for homeschoolers in the community for the last five years. Prior to having a family, she taught Spanish in the public school system and in private schools. Classes will be taught in her home. Claude Moore Colonial Farm - The Apprentice Program
Through the Apprentice Program, youth volunteers aged 10 to 17 portray colonial children for the Farm's visitors, as well as doing such behind-the-scenes work as helping in the office, cleaning animal pens, and tending greenhouse crops. Apprentices must attend an Orientation for the Apprentice Program and provide their own 18th century clothing in accordance with the Farm's clothing standards. Parents who complete 10 hours of volunteer work receive a $50 rebate off the $90 annual program fee. Apprentices are required to volunteer at least once per month from April through November. They may volunteer more often, and throughout the winter months, but it is not required. The apprentice season runs year round, though new apprentices are recruited and trained only at the beginning of each year. The deadline has passed for the 2008 season. The CIVIL WAR Series

In the spring of 2010, The Mariners’ Museum will be hosting our latest series on THE CIVIL WAR for 5th through 8th graders. During this activity-based program, students will investigate the major causes and effects of the Civil War, as well as the differences between Northern and Southern states. Using hands-on demonstrations, students will also explore the lifestyles of those who lived in a war-torn nation during the 1860s. This informative program investigates the lives and habitats of whales. We’ll also uncover why whalers were willing to endure the “Nantucket Sleigh Ride” in order to capture them! Using replica tools and teeth, students will get a chance to touch a whale bone; feel the artwork carved into a whale’s tooth; and grasp how large a whale is compared to a real whaling boat. In the fall of 2010, The Mariners’ Museum will be offering the very popular AGE OF EXPLORATION series for two age groups: * 2nd through 4th graders * 5th through 8th graders In this series, educators will introduce students to the economic and cultural life of Old World Europe, as well as discuss the reasons why Europeans searched for new landmasses. Following the initial session, students will learn about the remarkable voyages of the Vikings, Chinese, and Arabians; examine the strange and sometimes hilarious interactions between Europeans and the Chinese, Africans, Indians, and Native Americans; and study the technology and skills needed to venture the high seas during the Age of Exploration. Travel around the world to explore the diversity of plants and how plants are adapted for their ecosystem. Upper and Middle School Equestrian Sports Program. Fox Pointe Farm of Quinton, VA has a upper and middle school equestrian team with member openings for the 2010-2011 season! Unique opportunity for "horseless" equestrians, all levels of riders welcome. Train on the quality schooling horses, only personal riding gear needed. Team member eligibility is primarily ages 11 through 19, or grades 6-12. The season is September through April, students practice twice weekly and compete a minimum of 3 - maximum of 6 times per season.
