In addition to the variety of activities and programming throughout the Historic Area, special programs are scheduled for homeschool participants including a variety of hands-on opportunities. Special rates are available during this period for homeschoolers. Groups or individuals are welcome. Sample itineraries are available.

A hands-on day looking at George Mason’s world during the creation of the United States Constitution. Find out about Mason’s role in creating the Constitution and why he refused to sign it. Students discover the social and economic conditions of 1787 Virginia, help prepare foods popular in at the time; practice penmanship skills; discuss politics with characters from the past; and experience 18th century entertainments. One home school parent per group of 12 students is admitted free of charge; others must pay the chaperone rate.

"The African-American Experience: From Slavery to Emancipation" Homeschool Day

Students examine African-American life through historic photos and reproduction objects. Children can try carding cotton and being a soldier in the United States Colored Troops. Themes: slave life, work roles, "King Cotton," the Underground Railroad, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil War Amendments. Families will tour the White House and explore the exhibits.
