The American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia will hold a Middle School Essay contest, open to ALL middle school students (6th - 8th grade) across Virginia. Cash prizes will be given to the top 3 winners in each school district on the topic of "Sustainability". Online Registration Deadline (no exceptions!) - Friday, February 22, 2008. Essay Entry Deadline - postmark by Monday, March 31, 2008.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Home Educator Experience
Events of the 1770s pushed Williamsburg and its residents into Revolution and Independence. Yet, while politics raged, domestic life and work as well as commerce continued. Learn about running a household and preparing foods, colonial diversions and pastimes as well as education and apprenticeships at the Benjamin Powell House. This original 18th- century site will open exclusively for spring participants in our Home Educator Experience. Explore our shops of our various tradespeople, such as the Blacksmith, Cabinetmaker, Silversmith, Milliner, and Tailor, to find out what kind of work you might have done once you finished your apprenticeship. REACH Homeschool Formal

The REACH Homeschool Formal will be held at the Great Wolf Lodge on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
This annual Formal is for all teens 13 and up. It is limited to 150 teens and 25 chaperones.
Before February 20, the cost is $45.00 per teen. This includes food and door prizes.
From February 21 - March 15, the cost is $50.00 per teen.
From March 16 - to April 20, the cost is $60.00 per teen.
No tickets sold after April 21.

Farm Skills at Claude Moore Colonial Farm
Come learn Farm Skills at Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean,VA. Farm Skills is a great opportunity to teach homeschoolers about skills vital to life on an 18th century farm, such as candle dipping, wool carding, wool spinning, and corn pounding. You do not need to be an expert on colonial skills already; you will be taught everything you need to know! Farm Skills is a very popular program, and is held most Thursday mornings in the spring, summer, and fall from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Homeschool parents, this is a great opportunity for you and your children to work together, learn, and teach.
Adult volunteers will be paid an honorarium of $30 for each Farm Skills day they work.

Outdoor Adventure Classes
The natural world gives us a marvelous setting in which to find this adventure, as well as experience God's beauty, learn new skills, and make friends. This spring, WILD GUYde Adventures will be providing several outdoor experiences for home-schooled students and their parents. Activities like rock climbing, canoe paddling, hiking, and caving will provide outdoor opportunities for families to experience exciting fun with friends, physical skill learning, and fitness apart from traditional team sports. Students in Grades 2-3 will have three half-day trip options (2 hikes, and 1 canoe day); students in grades 4-6 will have four day-trip options (hiking, rock climbing, paddling, and caving); and students in Grades 7-12 will have four day-trips (hiking, climbing, paddling, and caving), coupled with an environmental study topic for each.

National Museum of the American Indian Programs
The National Museum of the American Indian is the sixteenth museum of the Smithsonian Institution. It is the first national museum dedicated to the preservation, study, and exhibition of the life, languages, literature, history, and arts of Native Americans. Established by an act of Congress in 1989, the museum works in collaboration with the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere to protect and foster their cultures by reaffirming traditions and beliefs, encouraging contemporary artistic expression, and empowering the Indian voice.

Art Classes for Homeschoolers
Formal art instruction, for ages K-12, by certified, experienced, and credentialed art teachers. Enrollment is now being accepted for the 2006-2007 school year on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited, so enroll today.
Chemistry Classes
Chemistry classes, using the Apologia Chemistry curriculum, will meet once a week for three hours: one hour of textbook discussion and two hours of lab work. Class times are Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon, or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Homeschool Shop in Culpeper or Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, in New Baltimore/Warrenton. Other locations and times TBA (possible locations include Clifton/Centreville, Woodbridge, or Manassas on Thursday afternoons). Weekly homework will be assigned, tests (about every two weeks) will be administered by the parents, and grades will be given. Cost is $45 per month from September through May, plus a $20 one-time supplies fee. Each student will also supply some household items for labs.

Introduction to Latin Class
This class is designed for middle-school students with strong English grammar skills and for high school students who want or need a slower-paced introduction to the language. The program follows the American Classical League guidelines for an introductory class, and is comparable to a semester of high school Latin. Enrollment in the class is limited to ten students.Tuesdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. for the 2006-2007 school year.
High School Spanish Classes
Homeschool teacher and mother Clarisa Loparo is offering Spanish I and II for the 2006-2007 school year. The class hopes to have large amounts of interactive dialog and cultural applications. Clarisa is a native speaker and has taught Spanish for homeschoolers in the community for the last five years. Prior to having a family, she taught Spanish in the public school system and in private schools. Classes will be taught in her home.
Spanish I is on Tuesdays from 8:50 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. Spanish II is on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.
