3.Educational Sites & Freebies

LearnNPS

If you plan on traveling this summer, use the National Park Service's LearnNPS website to make the most of your visit to a National Park in your area. The website includes links to all of the National Park websites where you can obtain more information about pre-visit, on-site, and post-visit curriculum-based education programs.

Financial Cost to Homeschool

Did you ever wonder what other homeschool families spend on curricula, support groups, field trips, and more? This survey, while nearly 10 years old, gives an excellent overview of what families in the San Francisco Bay area spend on homeschooling over the course of a year. These amounts are not outdated even with their age. I found them to be on the high end for our area (the east coast), although of course they represent the average expenditures of a wide variety of families.

Homeschool Oasis

Last month I had the pleasure of meeting Barb Shelton at a Virginia homeschool convention, and while I wish I had the time to stay for some of her seminars, I did at least get to browse her booth and look over her daughter's homeschool notebooks. Barb is the author of Senior High: A Home Designed Form+U+la and several other books for homeschool parents. Her site has a large section of helpful forms and articles for homeschoolers, particularly high school age. Her books recommend the creation of student notebooks and her site provides templates for many of the notebook pages. This site is large and contains more information than you will be able to digest in one sitting. I recommend bookmarking the site and coming back often.

Read for the Stars

Once again, AMC theaters are offering a free Kid's Pack to children who read three books. Each Kid's Pack includes a small drink, popcorn, and a snack. Complete entry forms will be accepted at the theaters from May 28 to September 9, 2004.

6.  Postercraft Coloring Posters (Our Sponsor)

Postercraft educational posters

Hands-on learning makes education concrete; it anchors and integrates knowledge. It allows children to fully immerse themselves in the learning process in an enjoyable way and it works with all learning styles. Our products have been popular with teachers (developed originally in Ireland) for the past twelve years. Over that period they have evolved in response to teacher suggestions.

The 3D Paper Globe is our most popular item. Thousands of children have proudly made "their world" for hanging in their bedrooms. Now in its third edition, it is fully up-to-date and comes with a big coloring map of Europe, which supplements the globe in terms of local detail.

7. Review- Age of Heroes Card Game

Age of Heroes is a card game from Legend Games. There are three ways to play this game. You can destroy the other players' cities while keeping as many of your own as you can, you can capture or build cities with the goal of having at least five cities, or you can collect five special resource cards to build a monument in your city. By playing this game you can learn about famous monuments, ancient peoples, and types of warfare. It can be a long or a short game depending on which way you choose to play, we changed the way it was played to suit how much time we had and how many of us were playing. We enjoyed this game, it was fun and educational and we hope you try it.

Age of Heroes is a card game for 2-6 players. It is simple in design so that children can master and enjoy it, while being sophisticated and challenging enough to hold the interest of adults. Age of Heroes is available from Legend Games for $11.95 plus shipping. The game was reviewed by Helen (11), Maggie (13), Katherine (13), and Hannah (15), four sisters who love role-playing games.
